Play that's purposeful and proven

Each week includes three gentle lessons that blend play, movement, and discovery, and a coordinated Play Pack page with hands-on, multisensory games that bring learning to life.

Adaptable for every child

The lessons include Simplify and Expand options so you can tailor activities to your child’s interest, attention span, and developmental level. Whether your preschooler thrives on movement or prefers quiet exploration, Meadowlark meets them right where they are.

Minimal prep, maximum connection

Most lessons use simple materials you already have at home—like crayons, tape, or a pieces of cereal. The one recurring tool you’ll need is a sensory tray (a shallow dish with sand, salt, or cornmeal), used weekly for tactile learning that builds memory, coordination, and focus.

Built on proven methods

Meadowlark Preschool follows the SATPIN sequence, a research-based letter order used in Orton-Gillingham (OG) and Science of Reading (SOR) instruction. This allows children to start blending and reading real words early—while keeping commonly confused letters (like b/d and m/n) apart for clarity.

Our lessons are OG-inspired and SOR-aligned: multisensory, structured, and developmentally grounded. Children see, hear, say, and move with each lesson—activating multiple parts of the brain and making learning stick.

Skills your child will build through playful exploration:

  • Letter recognition and letter–sound knowledge
  • Phonological awareness (rhyming, syllables) and early phonemic awareness (beginning/ending sounds)
  • Listening comprehension and print concepts through stories
  • Vocabulary growth through conversation, songs, and nature‑based explorations
  • Fine‑ and gross‑motor coordination; early prewriting readiness
  • Confidence, curiosity, and stamina for learning
  • Early number sense — counting, comparing, and matching quantities in daily play
  • Recognizing and naming shapes in the environment; exploring how they fit, stack, and balance
  • Sorting and classifying objects by color, size, and type; noticing similarities and differences
  • Using spatial language naturally (over, under, beside, near, far) to describe the world
  • Recognizing and making patterns through rhythm, color, shapes, and movement
  • Building curiosity and confidence in noticing “how many,” “what comes next,” and “what’s the same or different”

FAQs

Designed for ages 3–5 (Pre-K and young kindergarten), though many families have enjoyed it successfully with curious 2½-year-olds.

Absolutely—play is the most effective way young children learn, which is why every Meadowlark lesson is rooted in hands-on discovery, movement, and imagination. A little gentle structure alongside rich, playful experiences gives your child the best foundation for literacy, numeracy, and critical thinking later on.

Lessons take about 15–25 minutes, three days a week—short enough to fit your day, but long enough to build real understanding. Each lesson includes Simplify and Expand options for days your child is ready to stop early or excited to keep going.

Lessons include Simplify and Expand options so you can adjust activities to your child’s interests, attention, and developmental level. Meadowlark is designed to work with your child’s natural rhythm, not against it.

Many families pair Meadowlark Preschool with these companion resources:

  • Little Lark Stories — a three-book story set that follows Scout the bearded collie through weekly adventures that mirror what your child is learning in preschool. Each story nurtures language, comprehension, and emotional growth in just a few minutes a day.
  • Playful Prewriting — engaging tracing and drawing activities that strengthen fine motor skills and early handwriting readiness.

Reading daily to your child, exploring nature with a sense of wonder and curiosity, music and dancing, and daily life (grocery shopping, cooking, cleaning, singing, driving, and so much more) are all wonderful ways to deepen your child’s learning and connection in meaningful ways.

You can also follow Meadowlark on Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube, and join our email list for connection, tips, ideas, and updates.

You’ll only need a few simple materials you probably already have:

  • A sensory tray (a shallow dish with sand, salt, soil, cornmeal, or another filler)
  • Crayons or washable markers
  • Scissors
  • Glue stick or white school glue

Some lessons also use everyday items like paper, tape, cereal pieces, or a small toy. Most days take about 0–3 minutes of setup.

The Lesson Book and Play Pack are consumable, since children write, draw, and complete activities directly in the book. For reuse, we recommend ordering a new Preschool Curriculum for each child.

The Science of Reading is decades of research into how the brain learns to read. It shows that children thrive when they’re taught step by step how sounds connect to letters, and meaning grows alongside decoding. Meadowlark lessons are built on these principles—making reading feel clear, natural, and fun.

Orton–Gillingham (often referred to as OG) is a research-based approach that teaches reading through sight, sound, and movement. It’s structured, multi-sensory, and proven to help children connect sounds and letters in meaningful ways. Originally designed for dyslexia, it’s now considered one of the most effective ways to teach all children to read.

Created by longtime homeschoolers and curriculum designers trained in Orton–Gillingham, Meadowlark Learning brings proven teaching methods to life through playful, open-and-go lessons every family can enjoy.

Many programs teach letters in alphabetical (ABC) order, but research shows that’s not the most effective way for children to learn to read.

Meadowlark follows the SATPIN sequence, a research-backed order grounded in Orton–Gillingham and Science of Reading principles. The SATPIN sequence introduces letters in an order that lets children start blending and building real words early (like in, sat, pin, tap), rather than waiting until the end of the alphabet. This connects the letter and sounds children are learning with real-world application of their knowledge.

It also spaces apart letters that are often confused, such as b/d and m/n, helping children focus on distinct sounds and shapes while reducing common reversals.

By beginning with the most frequent and easily distinguished sounds, the SATPIN approach helps children connect sounds to letters naturally, build confidence faster, and experience success long before they’ve “finished the alphabet.” Meadowlark focuses on learning through sound and pattern, not memorization—helping your child feel like a reader from the very beginning.

While Meadowlark Preschool is not a therapeutic program, it draws from Orton-Gillingham principles and Science of Reading research—both evidence-based approaches that support developing readers.

Because the program is multi-sensory, story-rich, and flexible, it can be a wonderful fit for early learners with a variety of learning profiles.

We encourage families to adapt pacing as needed and to consult professionals for specific interventions.
